Code appointed by V&A

Code appointed by V&A

Monday, 24 July 2006

The world renowned V&A museum in London has appointed Code to develop a microsite for their forthcoming Leonardo da Vinci exhibition sponsored by Deloitte. Manchester based Code was appointed following a pitch against several other agencies.

The exhibition will provide an unrivalled insight into the mind of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), featuring 60 superb examples of his drawings from British collections brought together for the first time. The pages of Leonardo's notebooks give a vivid picture of Leonardo?s thinking on paper across the realms of science, technology, art and design, and his experimental investigation of nature's laws. Drawings and manuscripts will be presented together with several large-scale models of his designs and sophisticated computer animations to describe Leonardo's thought processes and illuminate his vision.

Leonardo's codices and works on paper are incredibly fragile and cannot be kept on permanent display, but by working with Code the V&A aims to make the works more accessible to the general public. To this end, Code will be producing for the V&A website an animated slide show of the Forster Codices, the 5 volumes of Leonardo?s working notebooks owned by the museum, so visitors can look through the pages at their leisure. In addition the site will include images of Leonardo's original drawings and the specially commissioned animations of Leonardo's work. Tickets to the exhibition can also be booked through the site via a link to the online booking facility.

Commenting on the appointment Code account director, Valerie Bounds said, "This is a very prestigious project and we're obviously delighted to be working with the V&A. The challenge for Code will be to bring alive the artist's work and reflect his original vision."

Joanna Cashmore, web content manager at the V&A added, "We were impressed with Code's ideas and creative approach which showed that they had clearly understood the brief and picked up on our key objectives. This is an important exhibition for the museum and one we hope will attract worldwide interest."

The exhibition, which will be curated by Martin Kemp, Professor of History of Art at Oxford University and eminent Leonardo scholar, will open in September with the website live from August.
